This is the first installment of the "Raw Randos" beat tape series in which Wrex Mason releases random beats from an extensive backlog that Wrex has been building for the last few years. As the title suggests, all the tracks are RAW, straight from the DAW with little to no mixing. This serves two purposes: as the most stripped down form of expression for Wrex Mason, and as a callback to beat tapes from the early days of Soundcloud and the Los Angeles Beat Scene, movements that continue to inspire Wrex Mason to this day.

There is something really special about this album. It's refreshing and different in the best of ways. sndtrk's sample selection is varied and eclectic and while the arrangements are minimal, it doesn't sound like it. The drums are abrasive and unpredictable and just a joy to listen to. The overall production is gritty but slick - such a lovely contradiction. This feels like "nu-boom bap", if there was such a thing? Underrated! Paul WH
